Free P4 Maths paper: Whole numbers and model word problems
A full Paper 1 and Paper 2 at the level of a very hard P4 end-of-year paper, in the PSLE format, for Singapore P4 pupils. 29 of the 100 marks are on whole numbers and model word problems; the rest cover the other P4 topics, as a real paper does.

The focus: 29 marks on whole numbers and model word problems, across both papers, from one-mark multiple choice to a five-mark final question. Timing is up to you. Sit it in one go against the PSLE times for exam practice, or spread it over a few evenings as homework is.
Where the marks go in model word problems
P4 word problems are solved with models: one amount a number of times another, a change with one amount staying the same, and a transfer that makes two amounts equal. The numbers are easy; the marks go on seeing which quantity does not change.
The mistakes this paper looks for
- Moving the whole difference to make two amounts equal, when only half of it moves
- Keeping the wrong quantity fixed in a before-and-after problem
- Rounding the wrong way at the halfway mark
Try a question from this paper
Paper 1, Question 13 (2 marks). A shop had five times as many green files as yellow files. After the shop bought 189 more yellow files, it had twice as many yellow files as green files. How many yellow files did the shop have at first?

The green files did not change. Let the yellow files at first be 1 unit, so the green files are 5 units.
In the end the yellow files are twice the green files: 2 × 5 units = 10 units.
The 189 yellow files bought are 10 − 1 = 9 units, so 1 unit = 189 ÷ 9 = 21.
The shop had 21 yellow files at first.
What the report tells you
- The score for each paper and the total, with the PSLE Achievement Level band as a guide, two years early.
- Whole numbers and model word problems skill by skill, apart from the rest of the paper.
- What we diagnosed: the mistakes the wrong answers point to, such as taking a fraction of the wrong group or treating an hour as 100 minutes.
- Three things to work on, and every question with its correct answer.
The score is free for everyone. The full diagnosis is sent to a parent's email, and nothing else is done with the details.
