Free P4 Maths paper: Fractions: mixed numbers and fraction of a set
A full Paper 1 and Paper 2 at the level of a very hard P4 end-of-year paper, in the PSLE format, for Singapore P4 pupils. 29 of the 100 marks are on fractions: mixed numbers and fraction of a set; the rest cover the other P4 topics, as a real paper does.

Where the marks go in fractions
P4 fractions are a fraction of a set, mixed numbers and improper fractions, and adding and subtracting with different denominators. Marks go when a fraction is taken of the wrong group, or a mixed number becomes an improper fraction the wrong way.
The mistakes this paper looks for
- Taking the second fraction of the whole set instead of what was left
- Writing 2 3/4 as 5/4 instead of 11/4
- Adding the numerators and adding the denominators

Paper 1, Question 14 (2 marks). A tank has 40 fish. 1/5 of them are goldfish and the rest are guppies. How many goldfish must be added so that 2/3 of the fish in the tank are goldfish?

Goldfish: 1/5 of 40 = 40 ÷ 5 = 8. Guppies: 40 − 8 = 32
Only goldfish are added, so the 32 guppies do not change.
After adding, the guppies are 1 − 2/3 = 1/3 of all the fish: 1 unit = 32, and all 3 units = 96.
Goldfish added: 96 − 40 = 56

- Fractions: mixed numbers and fraction of a set skill by skill, apart from the rest of the paper.
- What we diagnosed: the mistakes the wrong answers point to, such as taking a fraction of the wrong group or treating an hour as 100 minutes.
