Free P5 Maths paper: Area of triangles and composite figures

Where the marks go in area of triangles
Area of a triangle is new in P5, and the papers test it with figures: an obtuse triangle whose height falls outside it, one triangle measured two ways to find a height, and shaded parts that are half a rectangle wherever the point is.
The mistakes this paper looks for
- Using the slanted side as the height
- Not halving base × height
- Finding one shaded triangle instead of the whole shaded part

Paper 1, Question 13 (2 marks). ABCD is a rectangle 18 cm long and 14 cm wide. E is a point on AB and AE = 6 cm. Find the total area of the two shaded triangles.

Triangle DEC has base DC and its height is the width of the rectangle, so it is half of the rectangle.
The two shaded triangles make the other half: 18 × 14 ÷ 2 = 126 cm²
