Free P5 Maths paper: Whole numbers and model word problems
A full Paper 1 and Paper 2 at the level of a hard P5 end-of-year paper, in the PSLE format, for Singapore P5 pupils. 29 of the 100 marks are on whole numbers and model word problems; the rest cover the other P5 topics, as a real paper does.

The focus: 29 marks on whole numbers and model word problems, across both papers, from one-mark multiple choice to a five-mark final question. Also in the paper: Percentage, Rate, Volume, Fractions, Triangles and quadrilaterals, Area and perimeter, Data tables and graphs, Measurement, Decimals.
Timing is up to you. Sit it in one go against the PSLE times for exam practice, or spread it over a few evenings as class homework is.
Where the marks go in whole numbers
Whole number word problems in P5 are solved with models: one amount a number of times another, a gift that evens two amounts up, and ages whose difference never changes. Order of operations and rounding set the quick marks at the start of Paper 1.
The mistakes this paper looks for
- Giving the whole difference when only half of it was given away to even them up
- Forgetting that the difference in two ages stays the same
- Missing the smallest number that rounds up to a given thousand

Paper 1, Question 14 (2 marks). Li Ting had five times as many stamps as Grace. After Li Ting gave Grace 54 stamps, they had the same number of stamps. How many stamps did Li Ting have at first?

Li Ting: 5 units, Grace: 1 unit. The difference is 4 units.
To end with the same number, Li Ting gave Grace half the difference, so 4 units = 2 × 54 = 108.
1 unit = 108 ÷ 4 = 27, so Li Ting had 5 × 27 = 135 at first.
